THE ARTIST

Noël Nieva Villafuerte is an extremely promising up-and-coming artist from the Philippines. He obtained a B.A. in Human Resources Management from De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde in Manila, and he has lived and worked in the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, the United States and Denmark.

Noël is a self-taught artist who has been interested in art and photography at an early age. He took up painting seriously and began to develop his unique and distinct personal style when he resided in Washington, D.C.. Noel began working with watercolors, but he later discovered that the richer colors of acrylics were better suited to his intense and moody style. He has continued to grow and develop as an artist while residing in Copenhagen since May of 2002.

Noël draws the inspiration for his works from numerous sources, including the natural world, architecture and urban landscapes, and the human figure. However, his works do not attempt to capture a photographic image of real life or nature. Noël does not view his art as a vehicle for reproducing what already exists, but rather as a means for expressing his artistic vision of the moods and subtexts that lie beneath what can actually be seen in the real world. Noël does not begin his paintings with an image of the finished product in his mind. Instead, he paints according to his mood and his feelings at the time. It is only when he gets acquainted with a work in progress that he begins to develop a sense of where he is going and what kind of statement he wants to make with it. As a result, Noel creates works of art that are intensely personal and emotional which reflect what he was feeling and experiencing at the time he painted them.

Because his paintings are such a personal expression of himself, Noel has been somewhat reluctant to sell many of his paintings, although he has given several as gifts to people who have played a meaningful role in his life. Noël's style has evolved tremendously as he has continued to find his personal voice, and he has developed into a gifted and multi-faceted artist. His earlier watercolors exhibit a simple and more commercial style, while his current works show a much more complex and mature side of his artistry. Along the way, Noël has created works so unique and distinct in nature that it is often difficult to determine that they were painted by the same artist. The admirers of Noel's paintings have learned to cherish the emotional richness and stylistic diversity of his works, and those who are familiar with his work predict a very promising career for this young artist. Noël is a member of the Art Association of the Philippines. He is in the process of putting together exhibitions of his paintings at various locations in Copenhagen and Philippines. He is also preparing to take up formal studies in AR.CO, the Center for Arts and Communication in Lisbon Portugal by January 2004. Once a broader audience has the opportunity to discover the profound intensity of Noel's art, he should be able to finally achieve his goal of devoting all of his time to painting.
